Rihanna’s songs empower women through their themes of self-love, empowerment, and independence. She is known for singing about sexual liberation, body positivity, and standing up against toxic relationships.
So of course I was quite surprised to read an article via Yahoo, about a viral video on TikTok of a Michigan pastor speaking ill of a Rhianna song. In the video, the pastor claims he died and went to hell, where he heard demons singing our dear Rihanna’s songs.
Her lyrics often encourage women to embrace their individuality, embrace their sexuality and be true to themselves. Furthermore, Rihanna also uses her platform and influence to raise awareness and support causes such as education and health access for women and girls.
Through her music and activism, Rihanna is a powerful role model for women, encouraging them to be confident, and strong and to be true to themselves. With that in mind, here are my top 5 picks of empowering Rihanna songs that have gotten me through hell!
1. Cheers (Drink to That)
We all need to learn to be more grateful. Even during the seemingly toughest periods of your life, finding anything positive to “drink to” is cause for celebration. During my divorce, I celebrated solitude, freedom, and more things that we usually take for granted. It kept me cheerful and grateful. Gratitude breeds more to be grateful for.
2. Dem Haters
People who try to bring you down can come in many forms, such as friends, family members, colleagues, or even strangers. They may use negative comments, criticism, or manipulation to try to make you feel small or insignificant. It’s important not to take their words or actions to heart, and instead focus on your own self-worth and what you want to achieve in life. It’s also important to surround yourself with positive and supportive people who will uplift and encourage you. Be sure to set boundaries and do not let these people have power over you.
3. Diamonds
This song is the perfect self-love anthem. Having this Rihanna song on blast while staring at yourself in the mirror, has got to be a top-tier affirmation. There were plenty of times when I needed to remind myself of my own beauty and this song was the reminder I needed. Self-love is a form of activism. Showing up for yourself with daily reminders of your own self-worth is the key to moving forward through hard times.
4. Consideration
This is the song you play when you realize that it’s time for you to put yourself first. In this song, Rihanna squalls about a lover that has taken her love for granted for the last time. When you’re fed up and realize you deserve better, this is the song to turn on.
5. Lift Me Up (Black Panther Soundtrack)
I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house when Wakanda Forever debuted in theaters in 2022. When Rihanna’s vocals carried us through the rest of our dear King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), it helped us all let go. It also strengthens us with the love of our ancestors who have gone on before us. Sometimes leaning on them can help you through your most difficult times.
Music empowers women in a variety of ways. For many women, creating and performing music is a means of self-expression and a way to communicate their experiences and perspectives. Through music, women are able to tell their own stories and assert their own voices, which is especially important in a world where women’s voices are often marginalized or silenced. Additionally, music can serve as a form of resistance against societal expectations and oppressive systems.
Many female musicians use their platforms to speak out against sexism, racism, and other forms of discrimination. Women, like Rihanna, who create or perform music often find support and camaraderie among their peers, and through this sense of connection, they are able to inspire confidence and strength.
Rihanna’s songs are a powerful tool for women to express themselves, assert their voices, resist oppression and find a sense of community. What are your favorites?
