4 Things Women Discuss on the Road to Essence

Essence Festival 2018 is here!  This is the first year that I’ve brought my girls with me.  When I tell you, it has been an experience so far!  I adore my crew of ladies!  The things we women discuss!  I have my rider and blogger friend, Kenya (@browncitygurl), my roommate and blogger, April (@vowinspirenetwork), and my amazingly talented photographer friend, Celisse (@kreedcelissephotographyac).  These women are so diverse and interesting that you know we were bound to have some amazing conversations on our 7-hour drive to New Orleans.

Women Discuss
Celisse, April, Kenya, and myself at Essence Festival 2018!

We discussed so many different topics and it was eye-opening to hear the different perspectives.  Here are just four of the hilarious, in-depth, and introspective things we discussed:

  1.  We talked about the movie, “Acrimony”, and how women invest way too much of themselves in men who are not their husbands. It can cause bitterness and lead to irrational behavior.  Of course, not all of the ladies agreed, as one of my girls blamed mental illness as the main reason that Taraji’s character lost it.
  2.  After a pit stop to fuel up and my rendezvous with a sexy vanilla stranger, I called “Austin”, we discussed interracial dating.  I, of course, love the brothers.  But a sexy man is a sexy man.  My pro-black sister, Kenya, who has a Black King of her own, strictly stated that she just couldn’t see it and laughingly exclaimed, “A white man cannot handle you!”  At the end of the day, I too recognize that I think it would be strange to relate to a white guy, but hey, anybody’s game!
  3.  When BBD’s “Poison” played on the radio, my roommate made the comment that she thought the song is a cautionary STD awareness anthem.  LOL.  Hilarious I tell ya.  We had to let her know that the song was more a patriarchal attack on female sexual liberation.  Because “that girl” refused to settle down with him and/or break his heart, he decided to call her a whore (because he and the crew used to do her).  *Insert stank face.
  4. Finally, we talked about the new sexual frontier in a woman’s thirties.  We talked about the changes we go through at this age and how our sex drives increase so rapidly!  This led to a discussion on the importance of self-pleasure, sexual release and so on.
