On Galentine’s Day Show YourSELF a little Self-Care

For many of us, taking care of our skin falls to the bottom of our to-do list (if it’s even on our list at all). These days, the struggle is REAL when it comes to taking care of our skin. There are so many different products, price ranges, ingredients, steps, and suggestions – how are we supposed to know where to even start?

Yes, it’s a headache, but it’s one of the most important aspects of self-care. After all, your skin is the outfit you wear daily.  I know that when I was struggling with my recent skin issues, I was depressed. I didn’t want to go out, be seen, take pics or any of the other things I normally do.  Failure to correctly care for your skin can leave you with uneven skin tones, premature wrinkles, acne, or worst of all, skin cancer.

Mary J Blige’s skin is always perfectly bronzed. She shows herself some real self care!

The best place to start is moisturizing.  Yes, even oily skinned girls need to moisturize. And don’t forget the SPF.  I know, we usually feel we can skip this step. While sun exposure is important for producing vitamin D, too much sun can dry out our skin and that truly deters the #melaninpoppin affect we’re going for. That’s when our body over-compensates by producing additional oil and with it – unwanted acne breakouts. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

The solution to it all:  start by finding an oil-free sunscreen that won’t clog your pores or irritate your skin. Apply an even layer of sunscreen about 10 to 15 minutes before you go out into the sun so it has a chance to settle into your skin and become active.

After you’ve protected your skin, live by the philosophy that less is more. Keep face washing at a minimum, try your hardest to keep your hands away from your face, don’t pick at your pimples, drink plenty of water on the daily, and do your research on natural vitamins and supplements that will help to give that extra boost (flaxseed is a great place to start).

Of course, skin care isn’t a one size fits all situation. Do some thorough research to decide what additional treatment is best for your skin. As women, we often find that we talk ourselves out of putting time and money into care that will make us look good and ultimately FEEL good. We all deserve to feel confident in our own skin. Of course, that starts from developing a mindset geared towards self-love, but that also doesn’t mean we should ignore health issues when there are solutions. Once you find a routine that works for you, you will never regret spending the time or money on high quality skin products.
