Netflix’s new original series Family Reunion is a refreshing and relatable family show. It highlights the time leading up to the McKellan Family Reunion. The McKellans are a multigenerational family that is traveling from their influential busy suburb of Seattle, WA to the slow, rural town of Columbus, Georgia to celebrate their family reunion.
You can imagine that this is quite different from what they are used to living. So this series takes us on the journey of adapting while making memories with family . When I heard about this new series I became excited. The whole project is created and executed by people of color.
The creator and director is Meg Deloatch. She specifically chose all black writers to ensure the viewers saw a realistic portrayal of a black family. The same consideration was taken to choose the right cast to bring life to the scripts. I was excited to see Tia Mowry (Cocoa McKellan) Loretta Devine (M’Dear) , and Richard Roundtree (grandpa) casted as headliners of this series.
They have all paved their way to be stand out actors. Time and dedication was taken to make sure that the family meshed so Anthony Alabi was selected as the husband for Tia Mowry. He is a great addition to the cast with his high energy and warm smile.
The children complete the project. They are, Talia Jackson as 14-year old Jade, Isaiah Russell-Bailey as 12-year old Shaka, Cameron J. Wright as 10-year old Mazzi, and Jordyn Raya James as 8-year old Ami. The combination of the writers and casts helped create a memorable, relatable family oriented show. Definitely a must to watch for all members of any family. Netflix’s Family Reunion will be available to watch July 10th.
