Fans of Writer/Producer Issa Rae’s hit TV Show ‘Insecure‘ got some unpleasant news recently. The show that has run for four consecutive seasons on HBO is ending. The fifth season will be the final season of the show. Issa confirmed the news herself via Twitter.
The show premiered in October 2016, becoming an instant cult-like favorite. Unfortunately, the adventures of Issa Dee, Molly, Mirror Bitch, and the gang are coming to an unwanted end for its followers. But was this really it? However, before news of the show’s final season had time to circulate, a little hope arrived in the form of a prank poster of Issa Rae’s New Insecure spinoff. The prank had already surfaced online.
The comedic gag looked hopeful to fans for maybe about five seconds, and probably still is for those who haven’t realized that February 30th is a date that doesn’t exist. Still many are hopeful about the new series that’s NOT coming to HBO.
Although the series spinoff is set for the 30th of Neburary. There’s still no doubt that the lowkey obsessed, ride-or-die, Kickstarter-funding fans of Issa’s ‘Awkward Black Girl web series will drop some serious dough to see the “Confident” series become a reality.
Well, This Is Awkward
Fans of ‘Insecure’ have witnessed the show’s lead character experience less insecurity, becoming more organized with her life and her business as the series comes to an end. So one has to wonder . . . would fans of Awkward, Insecure Issa Dee appreciate Confident Issa Dee? Could the narrative stay satisfactory or comedic? Would the show’s writers need to keep capitalizing on the utter messiness that made the vibe great, to begin with?
Truth is, in 2011 I was one of the awkward black girls who found myself obsessed with ABG from its inception. I was hooked because before then Awkward Black Girls were grossly underrepresented. The fact that the main character represented my race and plight took me over the edge. I loved it so much. . . I wrote about it.
As a 20-Something Year Old, I hadn’t yet entered mid-life messiness and was just overcoming High School pettiness. However, the piece was a declaration, because that same year thanks to MTV, “Awkward” was more than a buzzword, according to the essay on Scribd it was an Epidemic.
“Awkward is becoming the norm, but what happened to Confidence“
April D. Byrd, The Awkward Epidemic
Maybe you can imagine how amazing the laugh was when I saw the name of the spinoff for the show. Regardless of whether it was a hoax or not, for me, the prophecy had been fulfilled.
The Glow Up
Whether Issa Rae’s new insecure spinoff ever gets the green light or not, there’s no doubt that Issa Rae has sparked hope in the hearts of Creatives, Dreamers, and Writers like myself who in previous times were awkward AF.
In real life, those who are paying attention have watched Issa win. She brought her vision to life and helped others do the same, breaking barriers in the process. Her success in achieving her dreams, gave us confidence that we could do the same.
“We have a tendency of trying to network up, but it’s really about networking across.”
Issa Rae
Over the last five years, Issa has taught us how to confidently win, freely sharing the wisdom, principles and gems that helped ignite her career. It’s no surprise that the legend’s next act, post series finale announcement is an in-depth Masterclass. Brilliant BOSS moves at this level are in fact achieved with master level confidence.
