Let Go & Let God – How to Surrender to God and Let Go of Control

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything right, yet life still feels completely out of control, you’re not alone. Trust me, I get it.

For years, I believed that if I worked hard enough, planned well enough, and stayed in control, everything would fall into place. But the truth is—control is an illusion. The more we try to force outcomes, the more anxious, frustrated, and exhausted we become.

Recently, I had a revelation: If I don’t know where I’m going, why am I still trying to drive? Maybe it’s time to step aside and let God take the wheel.

Why Surrendering Feels So Hard

As Black women, we are taught to be strong, independent, and self-sufficient. We carry everything—our families, our businesses, our communities. Letting go feels unnatural because we’re used to being the ones who “handle things.”

But here’s the problem: Holding on to control is draining. When we grip too tightly to outcomes, we leave no room for God to move. Faith isn’t about figuring it all out—it’s about trusting that God already has.

How to Surrender to God and Let Go

So how do we actually do it? How do we release the fear, anxiety, and stress that comes from trying to control everything?

Here are five faith-based steps that have helped me:

1. Acknowledge That You’re Not in Control

Say it out loud: “I am not in control, and that’s okay.” Recognizing that you don’t have to figure everything out on your own is liberating. Surrender starts with acceptance.

2. Release the Need for Immediate Answers

We often want clarity before obedience—but faith doesn’t work like that. Sometimes, God won’t reveal the full plan because He’s building our trust. Instead of obsessing over when and how things will happen, shift your focus to who is leading you.

3. Replace Fear with Faith

Fear whispers, What if this doesn’t work out?
Faith says, What if it works out even better than I imagined?

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 3:5-6:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Trust requires action—even when we don’t see the full picture.

4. Surrender Through Prayer & Reflection

Surrendering isn’t a one-time decision—it’s a daily practice. Here’s what helps:
Morning Prayer: Start each day by releasing your worries to God.
Journaling: Write down what you’re struggling to let go of.
Affirmations: Speak life over yourself: “God is in control, and I trust His plan for me.”

5. Watch for Signs of Divine Guidance

Surrendering doesn’t mean sitting back and doing nothing—it means moving in faith while allowing God to direct your steps. Pay attention to:
🔹 Doors that open effortlessly
🔹 Opportunities that feel aligned with your spirit
🔹 People who speak into your life at just the right moment

God is always speaking. The question is—are we listening?

What Happens When You Finally Let Go?

I won’t lie—learning to surrender has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. But it has also been the most freeing.
