The world of Black Panther, Wakanda, and King T’Challa will forever be near and dear to our hearts. And as we are still mourning the loss of the late great Chadwick Boseman, the first trailer for the beloved “Black Panther” star’s final film was recently released.
We lost Boseman unexpectedly back in August at the age of 43, after losing his private battle with stage IV colon cancer. And even though he was fighting for his life, Chadwick still managed to leave us one last masterpiece.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was filmed back in July and August 2019 in Pittsburgh, PA. Chadwick teams back up with his “Get On Up” co-star, Viola Davis in this Netflix adaptation of August Wilson’s 1984 award-winning play. This is the second August Wilson production to be adapted for film by Denzel Washington.
Now typically when you think of blues icons, names like B.B. King and Muddy Waters come to mind almost instantly. But there would be no blues without the musical contributions of Gertrude “Ma” Rainey!!! In this upcoming Netflix film, blues fans will get a chance to look back at the life and legacy of the musical maverick.
The movie follows the last years of Rainey’s career as a blues musician in 1920s Chicago. It will dive deep into the musical pioneer’s quest to be the best in the business, all while fighting a racist and sexist industry, that undervalues and exploits her talents despite her years of success.
The film also stars Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown, and Taylour Paige, and premieres Dec. 18 on Netflix.
