Regina King is an amazing human being! It’s important to note this because the Award-Winning Actress and Television Producer stays low key and out of any messy media.
It was a pleasure to engage with Regina at the Black Women’s Expo presented by Toyota at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta. Although she’s highly successful in her field, many people take note that she’s personable and “down to earth”. In the society we live in, It’s generally expected that very famous celebrities are unreachable and untouchable. It was clear as she spoke that Regina’s career success is for the most part sustained by her character and the positive people that she chooses to surround herself with.
During the sit-down with Regina at the expo she shared that a big part of her success and longevity has been her inner circle of supporters, who are mostly black women. She credits the faith and character of her mother, who she says has been most influential in her being the type of person that she is.
King offered some keys of personal and career success, and wisdom to the audience that would stand up to that of Oprah, Iyanla, or any other woke superstar that we love… *cough* Kim Isis Thomas.
From her own experience King suggested that “As you start to grow up and glow up, surround yourself with people who are doing the same thing.” “Get around people that your mental stability is as important to them as your financial stability.” It’s clear that she was impacted by her mother’s spiritual awareness in a great way!
Among other good things ahead for her, King talked about her inclusion in the upcoming film “If Beale Street Could Talk” a film based on the first book by Author and Activist James Baldwin. The film is set to be released November 30, 2018.
It was clear during her presentation that King has a genuine sense of honor and humility, ending the talk with the mention of mental health issues in the black community. A topic that caused her to tear up in reference to it, she’s sincerely concerned about the state of mental health awareness in the black community. “Mental Health is an issue that plagues our community. We’re so terrified of being judged” King left the crowd with the charge to “Say something”. If you notice it, If you feel it, say something.
We definitely want to hear more of what Regina King has to say. A true star who is full of motivation and black girl magic! She’s a whole treasure that we should protect at all cost.
