Serena Williams Recites ‘Still I Rise’: A Powerful Tribute to Black Women’s Resilience

It’s no secret—we here at I Hear That Girl! absolutely love and adore our sister, Serena Williams! Every time she steps onto the court, I see the essence of Black femininity—strength, beauty, vulnerability, strategy, power, and persistence. If that isn’t the definition of a Black woman, I don’t know what is.

Serena has not only proven that Black Girls Are Magic, but she has also shown the world that we are real, unstoppable, and undeniable.

Serena Williams: A Legacy of Resilience and Representation

Serena’s journey from the public courts of Compton to becoming a global tennis icon is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and excellence. The “I Rise” video encapsulates her extraordinary path, serving as an empowering narrative that resonates deeply with Black women worldwide.

Historically, tennis has been a white-dominated sport, yet Serena shattered every barrier in her way. She didn’t just redefine the game with her unmatched skill and athleticism—she challenged and dismantled the racial and gender stereotypes that tried to box her in.

Her presence has paved the way for future generations of Black female athletes, proving that we belong in every space, even those that were never designed for us. Seeing Serena dominate on the court lets little Black girls dream bigger, knowing their talents will never be questioned the way Venus and Serena’s were just 20 years ago.

Beyond Tennis: A Cultural & Social Game Changer

Serena’s impact extends far beyond the tennis court. She has become a cultural icon, influencing fashion, business, and philanthropy. She’s fearlessly spoken out on issues like equal pay, racism in sports, and the challenges Black women face in motherhood—forcing essential conversations that have pushed the culture forward.

She shows up unapologetically, embracing her curves, dark skin, and power, despite the constant criticism and coded language that has tried to diminish her. And still, she rises.

“I Rise”: A Visual Testament to Strength

There is no denying the impact the Williams Sisters, especially Serena, have made in the sport of tennis.  Little black girls don’t even have to be questioned on their abilities or possibility to succeed in the sport as little Venus and Serena were just 20 years ago.  The BBC created an amazing video entitled “I Rise”, starring Serena Williams, and it gave me such a sense of pride watching it.  Serena recites Mama Maya’s (Maya Angelou) soul-stirring poem while giving us views of her prowess, tenacity, and movement on the tennis court.

The BBC’s “I Rise” video is nothing short of breathtaking. Watching Serena recite Maya Angelou’s legendary poem, while showcasing her prowess, tenacity, and fluid movement on the court, fills me with immense pride.

This video isn’t just about Serena’s achievements—it’s a rallying cry for Black women everywhere. It reminds us to rise above adversity, stand in our strength, and keep breaking barriers in every facet of life.

Because when we rise, the world has no choice but to take notice.
