Walker’s Legacy Brunch with Mushiya Tshikuka, Melinda Emerson, and Janaye Ingram

The Walker’s Legacy Organization hosted a women’s empowerment brunch during Essence Fest weekend.  The event was sold out and I was super excited to attend, because I recently hosted a networking mixer on behalf of Walker’s Legacy back in May with my good friend, Cherise, and it was so inspiring.  With nothing but great thoughts in mind, I prepared myself to be inspired by the organization’s founder, Natalie Medeira Cofield.  The event was held at The Palace on Canal Street and we indulged in delicious eats.  I’m hungry now just thinking about it.

The event began on time and we were introduced to our panelists for the day, Mushiya Tshikuka, owner of The Damn Salon and reality tv star of ‘Cuttin’ It in the ATL’.  Melinda Emerson, Forbes #1 Influential Woman for Entrepreneurs, and Janaye Ingram, National Executive Director of the National Action Network.  Almost immediately, the panelists gave us hard hitting, realistic, sister girl advice on entrepreneurship.  They made it plain, that you can have what you want, if you get out of your own way.

After having a lil church from the preaching sisters, we moved on to an interactive activity that challenged us to use our talents and ideas collectively in order to solve a looming issue among African-American women.  It was a great time to hear the thoughts and ideas of the women and we walked away with a new respect of the resources and power that was present in the room.  I met some wonderful women that I plan on working closely with in the coming months.  Check out a few pics below of the day:
