My selection for this week’s music choice was an easy one. After, coming off a very exciting and entertaining weekend. I decided to celebrate my Beautiful black Sisters and what better artist than Laura Mvula. After attending a fabulous Women’s Empowerment Luncheon Earlier in the day. I became moved by the call of sisterhood.
While Listening to my favorite Chill out station on Spotify. the track entitled That’s Alright emerged from my speakers. This was surely a perfect way to end my amazing weekend. After being moved by her powerful lyrics which embodied the soul inspired song and wonderful chant like phrases of who are you to tell me that I’m not beautiful. The musical experience leaves you ready to stand up and Say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud. This tune is definitely a wonderful black women’s anthem. This British soul singer songwriter hails from Birmingham England. Earlier on in her career, Laura was influenced by the girl band Eternal. In 2005 Laura sang in a group called Black Voices which was started by her Aunt. Then in the following years to come, she formed a neo-soul/ Jazz group named Judyshouse. In 2013, she released Sing to The Moon, which peaked No. 9 on the UK chart and has been certified gold. This a great accomplishment for such a refreshingly inspiring artist. She reminds me a lot of Nina Simone with her storytelling approach to her artistry. This artist is giving us her on take on what we call British soul. I’m definitely looking forward to what’s next on the horizon for such a truly gifted singer songwriter that is Laura Mvula.
