The “Won’t He Do it” Singer Koryn Hawthorne is back on our playlists with a brand new album titled “I AM”. True to her soulful, signature sound, the album has a sultry R&B vibe. Hawthorne hasn’t strayed far from her chart topping debut into the music scene.
This time around however, Koryn is giving it to us raw, upfront and flat out, in a feel good type of way! Joy, one of the hot singles on the album is very reminiscent of old school Mary J. Blige flavor. It may very well be an homage to the Queen of R&B soul, but the passion behind Hawthorne’s delivery is no doubt about the joy of the Lord.
The timing is just right for Koryn to bring good news gospel vibes in a way that only she can. While the borderline Hip Hop/R&B flow of the album reaches toward the genre with only the lyrics that provide neutrality of the lyrics, the eminence of worship is still very much present on certain tracks. The album provides a very good mix of vibes which still remains true to Koryn.
This production of this album may be where the artist found her authentic voice the most. The single “Know You” has a Contemporary Christian radio vibe that does not disappoint and could easily transcend the neighborhood’s urban gospel station. “Sunday” takes the staple critique of Christians to only be devoted on Sundays and flips it into a fun, feel good ballad.
Hawthorne might be teasing her vocal skills and range on a few tracks but the “How Great” truly shows you that voice and the power it has when directed in worship for real. The single has a quality sound and beautiful undertone that could easily rival Lauren Daigle’s hit “You Say”.
A few singles that may be crowd favorites would be: Pray, Broken Pieces, You, Know You, Sunday and How Great which compose the majority of the album, so that clearly means it’s a good album. Hats off to Hawthorne and her team for this new classic.
