How My Best Friends & I Did National Unfriend Day

Take the time to strengthen the bonds of those you call “Friends”. In this day and age, that title is thrown around so loosely that many people don’t respect the meaning. I mean, after all, we have a National “Unfriend” Day. A day where you can Unfriend your social media friends that aggravate you, bore you, frustrate you, etc. So I chose to turn that meaning around and take National Unfriend Day as a day to reconnect with your true friends. We had a blast!

The nationally recognized Unfriend day was started by Jimmy Kimmel in 2016.  It’s a humorous idea to rid yourself of the nagging, fake friends of social media.  But it’s also an opportunity to do more.

We stepped away from our technological connections to strengthen our friendship with a physical connection.

There aren’t a ton of pictures or video of us, but that was the purpose of this Girlfriend’s Getaway. We stepped away from our technological connections to strengthen our friendship with a physical connection. So, we didn’t have time to check our social media or post and tag every place we went because we were actually enjoying the moment of all being together. Spa time, shopping, and savoring dinner and drinks were some of the activities we enjoyed together.  One friend drove into Atlanta from Augusta, GA and the other from Greenwood, SC.  Our conversations covered therapy to religion and everything in between with no fear of judgment just complete freedom of expression and burdens.

The weekend was short but so sweet and meaningful.  These two ladies are everything to me! I met them at 2 points in my life… one at 12 years old and the other at 22. Their unwavering friendship has seen us through so many of life’s changes. And when they are both together, they know me COMPLETELY as who I was and who I’ve become. On top of all of that, they have become great friends as well! I am a truly blessed individual in the friend department. I have no shortage of amazing black women I call my friends. And I am even more blessed to have two amazing BEST FRIENDS… or should I say LIFE friends. Not many people can say that.

Have you ever celebrated National Unfriend Day?  If not, what do you do to strengthen the bonds with your best friends?  I’d love to read your comments.  You may give me some new ideas.
