Fall 2018 Empowerment Tour Kickoff with UGA NAACP

School is back in session and that means the start of my fall empowerment tour!  I’m always excited to visit different college campuses to impart wisdom, inspiration, and motivation to the students.  Our kickoff event took place at the University of Georgia. I was invited by the NAACP Chapter at UGA.

Chapter President, Kaela Yamini, was so awesome and worked diligently to make this event happen for their group.  I presented on the topic of self-care.  Self-care has become a “buzzword” because of the need for it, but with it becoming a trend, many have lost the true meaning of the practice.

After a great event, the organization members took me out for dinner and we had some great table conversations!  I WISH I’d recorded some of those convo’s (I’ll definitely be sharing it on The Dope Black Chick podcast).  We discussed stereotypes, reaching out vs. reaching in, the measure of successful relationships, religion vs. spirituality, and so much more.  I’m glad to know that the future is in such capable hands.

Here are the steps to implement self-care I shared with the group.  I hope it helps you begin to experience effective self-care!

  • It’s OK to be selfish! Rethink the way you define that word, and do what is best for YOU!
  • Just BREATHE!  Life is chaotic.  It is full of ups and downs, but taking 3 deep breaths can truly change your perspective in the midst of chaos and change your life!
  • Affirm Yourself.  There really is power in the tongue.  It is important for us to begin to speak positively about yourself, your surroundings, your friends, and your future.
