We’ve all heard the saying “someone is watching” and it has been proven through 11-year-old ballerina, Charlotte Nebres. Charlotte is the first Black Marie. The lead character in New York City’s production of “The Nutcracker” by George Balanchine.
She is the first black ballerina to play lead in the play since its inception in 1954. Let that sink in. Yep, we have so much further to go. I am pleased as punch that Charlotte has broken through this barrier.
Nebres tells Good Morning America that she was inspired by Misty Copeland perform. “When I saw someone who looked like me on stage, I thought, ‘That’s amazing.’ She was representing me and all the people like me.” All the more reason to be a positive example of black womanhood. We’re proud of you Charlotte.
