Sarah Boone: Pioneering African American Inventor of the Ironing Board

April marks Black Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the contributions of Black women throughout history. To commence this month-long celebration, we spotlight an inventor whose ingenuity continues to inspire us: Sarah Boone.

The Ingenious Design of Sarah Boone’s Ironing Board

Sarah Boone, an African American inventor and dressmaker, made significant strides in household technology with her patent for an improved ironing board on April 26, 1892. Boone’s innovation was not merely an improvement but a transformation of the ironing process, particularly for women’s garments.

Born into slavery in 1832 in Craven County, North Carolina, Boone was later freed and went on to leave an indelible mark on history. Her design addressed the inefficiencies of traditional ironing boards, which were often makeshift planks of wood. Boone’s ironing board featured a narrow, curved design with a padded surface and collapsible legs for easy storage. Additionally, it included a detachable sleeve board, making the ironing of cuffs, collars, and sleeves far more efficient.

Despite facing the considerable challenges of being an African American woman in the late 19th century, Boone’s invention gained widespread adoption. Her design remains the foundation for modern ironing boards used today. Boone’s contribution to household chores simplified the task of ironing, making it more efficient and less time-consuming.

Sarah Boone’s legacy extends beyond her invention. She symbolizes the resilience and creativity of African American women who, despite facing systemic barriers, have contributed significantly to science, technology, and society. Our editor-in-chief, Kimberly Spidle, was so inspired by Boone’s story that she printed and framed Boone’s patent drawings, displaying them around our office as a tribute to Boone’s enduring spirit of innovation.

“If this woman could harness her creativity to achieve such a remarkable feat at a time when the rights of Black people, and especially women, were severely limited, it serves as a powerful reminder that anything we envision is possible,” says Thomas.
