This is Why Your Reading Should Include Girlfriends…

I am a literature fan.  And I’m always looking for new books and groups of literature lovers in which to discuss them.  Interestingly enough, I am not a member of a book club.  Of course, I have tried to start my own.  “Real Women Read” is an initiative I started a couple years ago to encourage women to read more.

Anywho, just like most of you, life got the best of me and I found less and less time for reading.  Enter the Pretty Girls Read event I attended this past Sunday!  It was perfect for me because for one, I want to read more!  Two, it was a cool idea and mission by a #dopeblackchick that I’ve been following for a while, author Ardre Orie.  It’s a literacy initiative meant to encourage women and girls of all ages to organically engage with books on a consistent basis.  Finally, it was an opportunity to meet women and visit a cool cafe I’ve been wanting to check out for a long time.  Perfect right?  I told ya.

So, at this event, we each brought our own books to exchange with the other ladies in attendance.  Once everyone mingled a bit and got to know one another, we took 45 minutes of uninterrupted reading.  It was so cool, kinda like a flashback to study hall, lol.  After the host called time, we sat and discussed the books we were reading.  We talked about the things we liked about the book, sparking a diverse conversation on various topics.  If you’re a glutton for a good conversation like myself, then you understand how a deep conversation on multiple topics is the motherload!

Group reading events like these are pretty cool and something you should check out.  I’m a multitasker so this helped me network, get out of the house, check out a cool cafe, and jump back into reading all in one.  The Pretty Girls Read event is on the road and popping up in other cities.  To get more info or to host a Pretty Girls Read event, visit www.iAMArdreOrie.com.
