The Power of “Sister Love”: 5 Women Led Intiatives That Give Forward

The “Sister Love” Panel at the 2018 Essence Festival was full of inspiration. The panel was moderated by Angela Rye and featured Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Remy Ma, Alencia Johnson, and Auntie: Senator Maxine Waters. The ladies discussed what impact can be made in the community now and named women who empowered them in their personal lives.

The ladies mentioned female family members and also each other. Mary J. Blige discussed the powerful relationship that her and Queen Latifah share and the impact that it has made in her life. The theme of sisterhood and unity was felt across the entire convention floor.

Queen Latifah who became overwhelmed with emotion when mentioning her late mother Rita Owens as the primary source of encouragement in her life, also discussed her latest venture to produce movies for Independent Female Filmmakers.

Mary J. Blige curated the panel uniquely titled “Sister Love” after her new jewelry line in collaboration with Designer Simone Smith (who is also the wife of LL Cool J).

Attendees left the panel empowered to make a positive difference in their community. VOW-Inspire Network captured footage from the event.
