You Won’t Believe What Happened When This Black Police Officer Went Undercover as a KKK Member
Nationwide — In the late 1970′s, Ret. Sgt. Ron Stallworth, an African American police investigator from Utah, went undercover as a KKK member in Colorado Springs, Colorado. And now, he’s sharing the whole experience in his new book entitled, Black Klansman.
It got all started when he reportedly called a KKK phone number that he saw in a newspaper ad. His goal was simply to gather information, but he was soon offered a membership and even an invitation to be a local KKK chapter leader.
Risking his life, Stallworth decided to accept and began regularly corresponding with the Klan leadership on the phone- including the former grand wizard, David Duke. Whenever his physical presence was required, he would simply send a fellow white detective in his place.
“They never once picked up on the fact that they were talking to two distinct voices,” said Stallworth.
Over the course of about 9 months, Stallworth’s impersonation was done so well that he was considered to be one of the KKK’s most respected members. But one the police side, he was able to gain tons of intelligence, and also managed to stop several crimes from ever happening.
He comments, “One of the things I’m most proud of is the fact that no black child — no child period — ever had to wake up to the sight of a burning cross.”
