I had the opportunity to become a pathway teacher at Philmore Academy. The opportunity was extended to me in late 2016. This was my first time teaching a curriculum on broadcast media. Philmore Academy founder, Sherrie Raymore, asked me to come in after a session with her Leadership Summer Camp. I had been speaking at her summer camp for a couple of summers and I enjoyed it every time. Her camp was focused on business leadership. I would talk to the girls about expressing their creativity and chasing their passions. After all, your gifts make room for you.
I shared with the girls, aged 10-16, about how I chased my dreams at the age of 16 and it led me to a successful career in radio. Radio opened up so much more for me and is majorly responsible for the I Hear That Girl brand. And here again, radio was leading me on a new path… that as an instructor.
I am happy to say, today September 5, 2018, my girls are launching their first podcast episode! The show is called Eagle Girls Radio, featuring Erionna, Zari, Aaliyah, and Cara. These little wonders soaked up all of my experience in radio and honed their skills to be able to lead a platform that allows young girls to speak their minds and be more confident.
Learning how to lead a podcast teaches young people to articulate their thoughts, verbalize their hopes, dreams, and fears. It gives them an outlet in which they can be heard. It reinforces the idea that their thoughts matter. They learn public speaking and communication skills as well. I am so blessed to have been a pivotal element in the creation of this show. Many thanks to their amazing leader, Mrs. Raymore for having the vision to give her students this opportunity.
