My Sundays are my sacred days, so if I am going out to an event, it had to be something I align with and support. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I wouldn’t let my invitation to an event that celebrates the survivors of this debilitating disease go to waste. Painted Pink, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit dedicated to educating every millennial on breast health. They empower millennials to take charge of their breast health with access to mentors, resources, and medical professionals who understand the intersection of breast health and the realities of breast cancer for this generation.
The brunch was an amazing experience. The room was filled with women in their finest pink outfits. The room overflowed with pink details and you could see that so much care went into ensuring the women in attendance felt special. The atmosphere was full of support from survivors, their families, and those just entering the fight.
I met a beautiful soul by the name of Joi. She shared with me her story as a new mother and warrior fighting breast cancer. We talked about the things that give her strength in these tough times. To this, she stated, “Food. Family. Faith.” I was drawn to her from the moment we walked into the event. Her aura screamed pure vibes, creativity, and authenticity. She told me about her love for cooking and how that brings her so much joy when she feels the pressure of her current condition. I see her resilience and strength, so I tell her that. She pulls up the sleeve on her dress to reveal a tiny bracelet with the word “strength” on it. She tells me that she wears this daily as a reminder to push through and persevere. She has no idea how much she has inspired me. She is a beautiful reflection of us and I will cheer her on to victory.
Save on activities, spas, restaurants, and events near you at GrouponWhile sharing their own personal testimonies, the panel of survivors touched on a common theme. The prevailing issue of black women’s concerns being dismissed by physicians is a real threat. Black women are dying more than any other group affected by this disease. We have to learn to advocate for ourselves, as panelist Felicia Mahone stressed. A huge thank you goes out to the founders of this amazing event as it was truly a necessary inspiration for all in attendance.
