It’s 2018. Yes, and we are still celebrating “firsts”. While most black people shake their heads at the irony of celebrating “firsts” in 2018 (present company included), I can’t deny how my soul leaps everytime another sister breaks through that glass ceiling and makes headway for the next generation. London Breed has done just that. June 3rd, San Francisco elected her as their first black female mayor!
Can I get a “hallelujah”? Better yet, let’s give sis a huge, “I hear that girl”! Her term will last until 2020 as Breed’s election comes after the city’s previous mayor, Ed Lee, died in December from cardiac arrest.
The race was a close one, but eventually Breed’s fellow Democrat and top opponent, former state senator Mark Leno, conceded.
“I’m a native San Franciscan – I grew up in some of the most challenging of circumstances,” said mayor-elect, London Breed. “I think the message that this sends to the next generation of young people growing up in this city, that no matter where you come from … you can do anything you want to do.”
*insert applause* I agree sis. I agree. Black women are in steadily moving into the places we need to be represented in. When it comes to politics, black women show up. Every. Time. Instead of being patronized during election season by people that only want our vote but couldn’t care less about the treatment and issues of black women, it is time we sit in those seats ourselves. At least then, we’d know that a black woman’s issues are being recognized.
I discussed this very issue in a previous podcast episode on The Dope Black Chick, with Atima Omara. To listen, click here.
We celebrate you, Mayor London Breed!
