Kamala! Oh, Kamala! – My take on the Historic VP Pick

For the very first time in history, a black woman has been chosen as the Vice President on a Democratic Party Presidential ticket. Kamala Harris, the senator from California is now tasked with a double duty, to aid Presidential candidate, Joe Biden in possibly running the country. And also as a representation of Black women on a global stage.

Well before today’s news there was a mixed reaction to Harris. Even during her presidential bid, she wasn’t well received. Why? Ol’ girl is just too much of a politician. Honestly, I cannot say what her stance truly is on anything. She will bend and turn towards whatever gives her face time. It’s amazing to me how at the height of the protests this year, she was everywhere demanding justice for police misconduct and police reform. But this is the same Senator whose actual criminal justice policies have made justice reform non-existent, increasingly disparaging for minorities.

With all that said, there is still reason for me to support Kamala Harris on the ticket. The first and most obvious is this, she’s a sister. I will always stand behind her in public, lol. Any squabbles or differences should be weighed privately (within the black community) and not in the court of public opinion. You may be saying, “Why should we just give her a pass”? I’m not saying we should, we should hold her to being an active representation of minority communities and not just a space holder.

Kamala may have only been chosen specifically for optics but we have an opportunity for her to be much, much, more. The Black female vote is a highly sought after vote within the minority vote and sister Kamala will have to work for this vote just like every other politician has.
