During the BET Awards show Monday night, Keyshia Cole and Monica took to the stage to present the Centric award nominees. Keyshia Cole announced that she will soon be releasing her album independently. The announcement seemed to take Monica aback, and she too followed suit by plugging her new album as well. Before leaving the stage and after announcing the winner, Keyshia Cole again, announced that she would be releasing her album independently. For some reason, Twitter users immediately jumped to social media to make fun of Keyshia Cole and her announcement:

If you were one of the people making fun of her announcement…you’re dumb! I’m sorry, I just had to say it. Keyshia Cole’s announcement wasn’t dumb, ignorant, redundant, or unnecessary at all. It was brilliant! Now before you jump on Twitter to call me out, let me explain, and then have your way.
- Over 12 million people tuned in to the BET Awards show Monday night. If you were going to release an album, wouldn’t you like to advertise your endeavor to 12 million people for free?! An independent release relates to a tight budget, so any free publicity you can garner will always be a WIN!
- Meeting Prince helped Cole with her decision to go independent. He promised a collaboration once she severs label ties. “He was walking past and I was like, ‘Hey, how are you doin’? Can you do a song with me or nah?’ He said, ‘Wait until you go independent ’cause you don’t wanna continue to be signed to a label, and I’ll definitely do a song with you.’ So I’ve been waiting for this day.” Cha-Ching!! With that kind of collaboration, Keyshia Cole will introduce herself to an entirely new and larger audience!
- Keyshia Cole is still filming her series with BET, “All In”, so every facet of her endeavors will be captured and will continue to market her independent release.
- All of the haters, Twitter bullies, and those that dislike her music have done nothing more than keep her name and information about her independent release in the public eye. Thanks again for the FREE promotion! 😉
- Finally, going independent means, that although you have a higher risk in producing your album (investment, budget, etc), if successful she will recoup 100% of her investment! I am NOT mad!
I’m not a big Keyshia Cole music fan, but I am definitely a fan of any black woman who takes control of her life, business, and her MONEY! Do your thing Keyshia and I will be purchasing your new album whenever it is released. My hat is off to you… I Hear That Girl!
