I’m Done With Football: The Real Reason I Watched the Super Bowl

Let me be honest, I haven’t watched football the way I used to watch football just 5 years ago. 5 years ago, I was a die-hard fan. But then Colin Kaepernick (a Black man) took a knee in response to the murders of Black people at the hands of the Police, and the powers that be in the NFL lost their god-damned minds.

Needless to say, I boycotted the games and haven’t been back since, and I have tried (really). This year, after 2020 showed the world that taking a knee was the least of their worries, coronavirus snatched the NFL’s edges and left them with empty stadiums. And alas, here we are. In a bid to make the Super Bowl worth watching, the NFL realized it was missing some… flavor. They did what they needed to do to get my Black eyes back on and here are the women I tuned in to watch:

Amanda Gorman

Baby girl is having her moment and I’m here for it. Just a few weeks ago, she was reciting a magnificent poem on the steps of the capitol for the inauguration. This weekend, she is the FIRST poet requested to be a part of the opening ceremonies of the Super Bowl.

H.E.R.

Sis was giving all sorts of Jimmy Hendrix vibes. Absolutely amazing and talented “Artist” she truly is.

Jazmine Sullivan… and that dude.

Seriously, we have no idea who dude is. However, I was happy to have seen our girl Jazmine singing the anthem. Although, I wish this was a solo piece. NFL… they just can’t get right. She’s the one with the pipes fools. NOT, Alicia Keys. I said what I said.

All in all, the Super Bowl didn’t actually give me anything except more to be upset about in regards to their hypocrisy. Oh, and $250 million to help end systemic racism is best spent on a public apology to the man affected by systemic racism in your very own company. Can’t recall? Let me remind you. COLIN KAEPERNICK! The NFL tried to slide in this ridiculous commercial stating that the fight for “equity” is not over. GTFOH! Your company literally silenced a Black man for speaking up about the inequities that Black people face! But I digress.

Yeah… so, this article is truly just a shout-out to the amazing Black women who graced the event. Other than that, the NFL will not get a return fan out of me. I still love football, but I won’t be watching the NFL games. Oh, and I’m now a huge Atlanta United soccer fan (the real football).
