Black women are constantly contributing and showcasing their greatness in this world. In a recent interview with Variety magazine, Whoopi Goldberg is planning to show that Black women can be superheroes too.
Now, while that statement became a cause for news stories (such as this). Black women are well aware that we are indeed, superheroes. Black women stand at the forefront of change and perseverance. We are the saviors of our families, communities, and countries.
I have always had a great admiration for Whoopi Goldberg because her being was a direct refusal of status quo. She stood firmly in her existence. Never one to live in the box that our society creates for women, let alone the even smaller box for Black women.
The EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) award winning Icon, has shown us time and time again that who you are in this world should be broadcast boldly and unapologetically.
“I couldn’t look glamorous like other people look glamorous. I wasn’t thin and I wasn’t a white lady, so I had to find my own style.”

Superheroes
The entertainer is penning the script for a superhero film about an older Black woman who acquires new powers and has to learn to use them. “Since I was a little kid, I’ve been obsessed with superheroes,” Goldberg says. “They’re all saving the earth all the time. But do you know who’s really going to save the earth? Old Black women.”
I can’t wait to hear more on this film, because this is a true story to me. And it’s a perspective that the world needs to see. Black women give of themselves tirelessly every day and it’s a welcome reprieve to be noted, even fictionally, of our power.
